Practical driving-test waiting times remain uneven. Some learners find an appointment much sooner than the headline figure suggests, while others still face a long wait. The sensible response is to plan early, but only book a centre and date you can realistically use.
What do the waiting-time figures really mean?
DVSA now publishes a median waiting time as well as an availability measure. The median is the middle result: half of completed tests had a shorter wait and half had a longer wait. It describes what learners experienced; it is not a promise of the next appointment you will see online.
For May 2026, DVSA reported a South West regional median of 7.1 weeks, the lowest regional median at that time. Individual test centres can differ, cancellations appear unpredictably and local availability changes, so do not assume that figure is the current wait for Dorchester.
The four main DVSA booking changes
1. You only get two changes
Since 31 March 2026, a car practical-test booking can only be changed twice. Moving the date, time or centre counts as a change. Swapping appointments with another learner also counts. If you change the date and centre together in one transaction, DVSA says that counts as one change.
2. The learner must book and manage the test
Since 12 May 2026, only the learner taking the car test can book, change, cancel or swap it. Driving instructors and third-party services cannot do this for pupils. Rob can advise you and provide his instructor reference number, but the booking must remain under your control.
3. Unofficial appointment-scanning services are not allowed
DVSA says learners must not use unofficial services that scan the booking system for appointments, including cancellation-finder websites and apps. Breaking the booking terms can lead to online access being suspended or the booking being cancelled.
4. You can only move to nearby centres
Since 9 June 2026, a new booking can normally be moved only to one of the three nearest centres to the centre currently booked, or back to the centre first booked on that current booking. This is why choosing the initial test centre carefully matters.
What if I need to cancel?
To receive a full refund, you normally need to cancel at least 10 full working days before the car test. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not. If you use both permitted changes, you must cancel and make a new booking.
Can two learners still swap tests?
Yes, if both learners already have bookings and meet DVSA’s conditions. A swap must be arranged by phone, counts as one change for each learner and must normally be requested at least 10 full working days before the earlier test. Location and test-type restrictions also apply.
What County Driver Training pupils should do
County Driver Training only accompanies pupils to practical driving tests at Dorchester. Speak to Rob before booking so the proposed date can be checked against your progress and his availability.
- Talk to Rob before booking so you have a realistic idea of when you may be test-ready.
- Ask for Rob’s instructor reference number and add it to the booking. This helps the system check his availability.
- Book a test centre you genuinely intend to use, not a distant placeholder.
- Keep control of your own reference number, email address and booking details.
- Do not waste either of your two changes. Check with Rob before moving the appointment.
- If you are not ready, act before the 10-working-day deadline rather than hoping for the best.
Will the new booking system end the waits?
DVSA began a small trial of a new user-focused booking platform in Durham in July 2026. DVSA has been explicit that the platform itself will not create more tests. It may improve the booking experience, but learners should not treat it as a guarantee that waiting lists will disappear.
